MBA Curriculum

MBA Curriculum

The MBA curriculum is comprised of five major components: Foundation Courses & Proficiency Requirements, Core Courses, Option Courses,  International Requirement and the Capstone Experience. In addition, all Proficiency Requirements must be met the first quarter of admission into the program.

Catalog Course Descriptions

Foundation Courses

The foundation courses for all MBA options and the mathematics and statistics proficiency requirements are intended to satisfy the common body of knowledge in business administration as defined by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the professional accrediting body for Business Administration degree programs. Students with foundation courses to be completed are urged to apply and be admitted to the MBA program as early as possible.  Foundation courses are waived for students with an undergraduate degree from an AACSB-accredited university.  Other students may have foundation courses waived based on equivalent undergraduate courses, on a course-by-course basis.

Proficiency Requirements

Equivalent coursework completed with a grade of "C-" or higher will satisfy the MATH and STATISTICS proficiency requirements. Students who have not satisfied the MATH and STATISTICS proficiency requirements will be blocked from registering for classes that require these proficiencies as prerequisites.  Students who have not taken the WST will be blocked from registering the second quarter after admission to the program.

Core Courses

The Graduate Core courses of the MBA curriculum provide the foundation for the advanced work that occurs later in the program. The Core is common to the schedule of all MBA students.

FIN 6300 - Seminar in Financial Management
MGMT 6100 - Operations Management
Interpersonal Skills Course selected from the following:
MGMT 6560, 6612, 6617, 6630, 6635; or MKTG 6403, 6460

International Requirement

Each student receiving a MBA degree must complete a 4-unit course in International Business or International Economics as part of the 45 units of the degree.  Courses include:  ACCT 6470; ECON 6107, 6700, 6705, 6710; FIN 6375; MGMT 6140, 6150, 6440, 6570, 6675; or MKTG 6470

Capstone Experience

The capstone course is taken as one of the final courses in an MBA student's program (usually the quarter the student would be graduating). In these comprehensive courses, students will integrate knowledge gained in their core and option courses. A project is required in these courses.  Students may choose to take MGMT 6490 or ENTR 6490.

Policy on the use of 3000-, 4000-, and unrestricted 6000-level courses in the M.B.A.

Most M.B.A. options restrict the use of 3000-, 4000-, and unrestricted 6000-level courses. You should clear any planned use of upper division undergraduate coursework in the 45 units for your M.B.A. degree with either the graduate option advisor or the CBE Director of Graduate Studies.
